Sungmin
Jung.

Hellllllllooo World, this is my folio of selected works from the past four years. It's a mix of academic projects, built work, and a few things in between. Each project is a sketch of a position rather than a finished claim, and together they trace the arc of my architectural journey so far. I trained as an architect in Korea and continue to do so in California, and between those two coasts, the work attempts the same quiet thing: to find a clear geometry that can carry a building, and a clear story that can carry the geometry. Where the script is heavy, I try to make the form light. Where the form is severe, I try to make the room generous. Thanks for flipping through.

A note on the work

I trained as an architect in Korea and continue to do so in California. Between those two coasts, the projects in this folio attempt the same quiet thing: to find a clear geometry that can carry a building, and a clear story that can carry the geometry. Where the script is heavy, I try to make the form light. Where the form is severe, I try to make the room generous. The work that follows is incomplete by design; each project is a sketch of a position rather than a finished claim.

How does a city house its collective memory in the age of the cloud? Located at the nexus of Chelsea’s Gallery District and the Hudson River, this project reimagines the data center as a civic monument. The architecture is defined by an evocative, performance-driven envelope that links the pedestrian flow of the High Line to the depths of the Hudson. Inside, the data core is experienced through a series of atmospheric thresholds—from cascading waterfalls of recycled coolant to immersive media galleries. By transforming infrastructural necessity into a sculptural landmark, the project acts as a luminous anchor for New York, preserving the future of media art within a dynamic, fluid, and environmentally-calibrated shell.

A year of mid-rise typological studies for a Southern California developer-architect. The studies organize themselves around façade rationalization — how a finite kit of panels can produce a wide range of elevations — and around floor-plate efficiency in the awkward 6-to-9-storey band where building code, parking, and pro-forma all argue at once.

A study of eighteen single-occupancy rooms drawn at 1:20. The rooms argue that thickness — not area — is the variable that produces interior quiet, and that a room's character is mostly built into its walls before any furniture arrives.

A research sequence developed under Prof. Eun-Kwang Kim (NRN 13001144) that maps the unbuilt residual space of mid-density Korean blocks. The work became a small archive of fragments rather than a single proposal.

Twelve months of weekend work documenting and repairing the homes of elderly residents in Uljin County. The drawings are not portfolio pieces; they are punch lists. Included here because a portfolio that excludes them is not honest about how I learned to build.
